I painted this from a photograph taken in the Karoo, on a road trip to Cape Town — these hills, and the Cape Dutch–style farmhouses scattered through them, have always caught my eye. On this particular day, low clouds capped the whole scene in a moody, stormy look.
Farmhouses like these have always struck me as small, stubborn outposts of order against how wild the Karoo can look around them.
