I painted this from a photograph taken at Simwenge Lodge, Deka, in 2016, when the Zambezi was almost full — and even at that height, the river kept its calm. Simwenge is one of my favourite places on the river, exactly for that quality: it never seems to lose its stillness, however high the water gets. This has always been a place of rest and recuperation for me, and for many others.
