I painted this triptych of oils on canvas from a photograph I took of Lake Kariba on a grey, rainy day. It was one of those days when the lake seemed like a calm sea. The forest of ghost trees framing the bay were the only giveaway that the “sea” in front of me had once been a lush mopane forest before the river was dammed, flooding the valley for hydroelectric power.
The incoming storm dominates the sky, with only a few hints of orange, yellow, and crimson as the sun peeks through the clouds. The brewing rain clouds are reflected in the water, which has a faint wash of blue among the trees. The two promontories enclosing the bay complete the composition.
